About the Major Bosshardt House

The major Bosshardt house was built in 1605, which means it is the oldest brick building in Amsterdam. Major Alida Bosshardt lived in this historical building in the 1960s and ‘70s. The house was a safe haven for all kinds of vulnerable people in Amsterdam: prostitutes, addicts, homeless people and whoever else needed help. Everybody was welcomed by the Major and the Salvation Army.
Open to the Public
The building on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, in the heart of Amsterdam, was renovated and the interior redesigned. On June 8, 2022, the Major Bosshardt house was opened by Queen Máxima. Today, Dutch and foreign tourists regularly visit for a tour, meeting or simply a look at the house.
